I love the perspective this guy gives me. I dont agree with everything he says and thats ok. You all don't need to get so worked up, its just criticism.
I don't understand some of his criticisms about composition, like the guy having an apple. Isn't the POINT of street photography for it to be candid? If the photographer stages it the photo isn't "street photography" anymore…
most of the pictures are obviously snapshots, which makes it foolish to say this should be done so and this should not be in the picture, like the photographer was able to intervene into the events, its just a few seconds in which you decide what and how you photograph. He should give more constructive critic about how the photographer could done the image better from the technical aspect, like use a different lens or change the apperture etc.
A photographer that makes Martin Parr look good! I thought it would never happen. Most of the work he was ripping into had great composition. He should consider that most amateurs don't have the time or money to slave after getting the perfect shot. Give credit where credit is due and rip into when there is bad technical aspects or little visual interest! This guy's a complete arse.
Being an amateur street photographer, I totally agree on his points about composition and other photographic thumb rules. Having said that I do not agree with his comment on the photo with a fellow holing the gun to his friend in a very jovial way, it is a good photo and makes the viewer concoct a story in his/her head. The fact that someone else has already taken a similar photo should not have to lower it's value .
There was some constructive criticism which was good but a majority of it was just ripping into how terrible – he thinks – these photos are. pretty pretentious if you ask me.
It takes thought, intelligence and skill to compose and take a "good" photograph and in the same way it takes thought, intelligence and skill to discuss photographs in a way in which viewers of the discussion can learn something about the process of composing and taking "good" / pleasing photographs of their own. This guy may know how to take "good" photographs but he does not know how to discuss the process. "Rough around the edges" is being kind.
Others never see what the person taking the photo sees, photography is many things to different people. If you try to be like someone else or others expectation or critiquing of you then you will never be unique but only a copy of someone else.
I hate it when an "expert" like this says something like, "not very well composed, or poorly put together" without telling us HOW the picture could have been improved. Such as the pic with the guy holding a gun to the head of another guy.
To say you can't discuss a photo because they are insulting to you is a joke. You literally take the easiest photos possible, you find someone on the street [to capitalize on their poor misfortunes], put a camera right to their face and snap. You don't even have to worry about setting the focus or exposure correctly. WTF Vice, find a better photographer to do these. To photographers, don't listen to critics. Do what you feel is right in your heart, be yourself and do it because it makes you happy.
I've never heard this level of insight go into analyzing photographs before, I really liked Gilden's analogy with the sorceress and the poison apple, it was really imaginative and spontaneous.
WTF Seriously! This guy! He shoves a camera in people's face as they walk down the street. That's it folks! He's full of himself and a HORRIFIC photographer. HORRIFIC!

Everyone talking about his analyze but what bother me the most is his pencil
what an amazing critique
Am i the only one who laughed like a maniac to that last pic of the fat lady's double chin?
really insightful. Its always cool to see experts critique. Although you should still take everything with a pinch of salt
wow, this guy is an asshole
The typical artist. Talking shit about other peoples cause art is not what you do for others, you create art for yourself.

I would love to ee more of these, or art related videos in general

Awesome concept and video!!
Never, I repeat, NEVER let anybody else tell you how to make your Art.

it's not easy to take a street photograph, we should appreciate every struggle that was made to take this kind of photograph

Excellent! I could listen to Bruce all day long :-)

"there is no special way a photograph should look" GW

Bruce Gildens photos are not that great. I've seen so much better.
His pencil is so annoying !
Some photos are good and some just suck. The story about the lady who supposedly gave the poison apple to the older guy is ridiculous.
I know a title for the photo! MURICA!!!!
jajajaja loved this critic
This, ladies and gentlemen, is one true photographer.
omg, that string gets on my nerves so haaaaaaard
"Idont like the apple on his hand." hmmmm this is street photog right? so that means you can't instruct the people to pose.
I would like to disagree on that last photograph. I found that chin and its composition tobe quite interesting.
this is so inspiring, thank you Bruce Gilden!
sir… i saw your work… half of those shots are 5 times better than yours…
i love this episode! more from bruce, please!
At first I didn't like him then I did
