Great tutorial Gavin. Couldn't you have reduced the exposure on your subject by turning the soft box further away from the subject and 'feathering' the light a lot more ?
Well done Hoey, nicely explained, however you could have mention a ND gel over the flash as well which may be a better option for some who don't want to put anything in front of their lenses.
Nice new Oly 25mm f/1.2 lens.. if I still had my E-M5 Mk2, pretty much the exact one you have there, I'd probably pick that lens up for portraits, as well.
Yeah, the trick about using the ND filter AND using it over the light meter when taking a measurement never occurred to me before.
I think you also do a great job to prove, or rather disprove, that you don't necessarily need a 35mm full frame camera to make a great photo, even with portraits, and using an ND filter (or any other filter) over your lens is not going to mess up the IQ of the photo you are trying to make. You still get great results with solid techniques anyone can do.
I love your style and simplicity in getting the idea to viewers, ARE YOU PLANNING ON SWITCHING TO FUJI? Or what your thoughts on it? since it has the leaf shutter on their coming F100X lens and then you can sync up to 1000 speed with any light?
I dont understand how you are able to shoot at f1.2 without the depth of field being so blurry that the eye is in focus but EVERYTHING else is not out of focus? Can you explain please?
Brilliant as always Gavin. You know it never occurred to me to place the ND filter over the lightmeter dome to obtain the reading. I always try to work out the stop difference in my head relative to the meter reading. Simple but effective :-D
Great tutorial as always! Gavin is the man, and I have learned so much from his videos over the years! I would never have thought to meter the light through the nd filter. http://www.ChrisWatkinsPhoto.com
