It is possible to "block" vissible light from popup by using filter or something like that witch allows the infralight travel through but not the "real" light.

Did you get rid of the footprints in post? Also the star fish looks bedded down in the final shot and not when the shot was taken!!

Most external flashes can be triggered with your cameras pop up flash, but it has it's limits.
