Hi Matt.. We have 24 to 50 mega pixels cameras today.. So if I mount my camera on a tripod, use a 35mm lens at an adequate distance and crop it up later, shouldn't there be a distortion free, reasonably sharp portrait? Just wondering..
I saw your other video about "compression" I think you should get your facts right, you have a lot of subsribers who listen to you. There are no such thing as "lens compression" on most regular lenses. It's all about the distance to your subject. You are confusing "lens compression" with perspective compression. A 24mm lens will have the exact same gemoetry as a 100mm lens from the same distance. The only difference is the crop. It is important to know the difference.
I have a DX body and I use a 50mm f1.8G lens (75mm equivalent on DX) on portraits. There's very unnoticeable vignetting (unless you are a pixel-peeper) and no barrel distortion at all… I think, if you have good lighting set up, it's better to shoot with an FX lens on a DX body. You will step further from the subject however, you can take a very clean portrait with it since the DX will only use the best part of the FX lens which is the center part. Just a thought…
Why are some making a big deal about the model? As far as I'm concerned, she could be dresses as a nun or be completely naked and the technical explanation would still be the same. So if you can't see pass the model, well, you are the one with the problem.
It's really great to learn photography online with the best photographer! This is what I really like about Mr. Matt Granger! He gives very detailed and interesting information and at the same time uses beautiful photographic subject! :)
thanks matt, always good to see the comparisons. i like that you showed the 24mm portrait. I actually shoot lots of environmental portraits. sometimes i use the 20mm 1.8 sigma lens… dont love that lens, but it does allow me to isolate my subject in a huge environment. definitely need to be creative with it so your subject is not just totally out of proportion.
Matt, isn't compression a function of the effective focal length? For example, if I'm shooting someone from 20 feet away with a 105mm lens on FX and a 70mm lens on DX, the background compression should be the same, right?
At the same aperture the depth of field would be different (I get that) but I don't really see how compression would alter.

creepy dude
your pics are just mehhhhhh….
Very helpful video. Thank you.
She has a great body
im going to be honest, i only clicked because of the chick in the bikini.
OMG… What ARE you really doing in these videos with all those nice Asian girls lol
This is rather best chick for the lens
Is FX worthy for portraits? I have DX now and i dunno, if i should go for FX. For studio, i think DX is ok, but i also shoot a lot outside.
I'll be right back
I missed the DX portion of this video.
It's portraiture in bikini. As it says on his T shirt get your gear out. Better get the correct information about lenses elsewhere.
also walking back from the subject (with cropped sensor cameras) will change the way the background looks!
she can have my telephoto anyday!!! :)
comme jte la demonte la brune en bikini !!!!!!!!!!!! trop trop bonne ^^
That beautiful Lebanese/Greek/Italian girl is too distracting. Now what is Matt babbling on about? Need to bloody watch again.
I'm offering $5 customs portraits for the next two weeks!!

Did anyone else notice the "photographer" set focus and then reposition the camera before snapping the shot?
nice
Hey Matt, love your vids, they have been very helpful and very inspiring. Where can I get one of your jackets?
Never heard a word you were saying lol

Who's the model? And what are her social media accounts?

I highly applaud and respect you for giving the model credit. Some photographers are a real "ass" about that.
I am on a crop sensor I am going to be doing a lot of head shots. So I am guessing I need a lens that does 85mm ???
It would have been useful to have a side by side comparison of all the shots taken at the different focal lengths.
Hmmm… 85 seems to be the ideal…. hopefully, sony will mske one for the emounts soon.
can you please demo your model^^
loved the chick
Этот додик по-русски может говорить?
who is that hot asian ?
I really like your video I just want your advice if its worth buying the tamron 24-70 since the nikon 24-70 is more expensive for me

Nice video, but I shoot brick walls all the time and am tired of being judged for it!
